Edpuzzle in the Reading Classroom
I recently discovered a new tech resource called Edpuzzle. This resource allowed me to search from YouTube, Khan Academy, Learn Zillion, Vimeo or other video streams, insert my own audio notes, narrate over the video, and best of all insert questions at any point in the video to create quizzes multiple choice or short answer quizzes. The first time that I used this tool was was during a reading/social studies lesson. My fourth graders have been struggling with non fiction. They've been having trouble synthesizing across multiple text. I decided to have my students read an article about an African American icon as it is February and we are celebrating Black History Month. After reading the article I found a cool video on YouTube based on this iconic figure. Instead of just having my students watch the video, I decided to make it interactive using the many features that Edpuzzle offers. I was able to insert an introduction using my voice at the beginning of the video. Immediately my voice grabbed the students attention. The video clip that I found was only 15 minutes but I was able to embed comprehension questions throughout the video. I found that the video more engaging and with the guiding questions throughout the video students were able to make a clear connection between the text and the video. After watching the video several times students had to complete a writing prompt using both the article and media clip. Many of my students were able to view the video several times using the computers in the classroom.
Based on the SAMR model I would rate this lesson as Augmentation
Edpuzzle in Math (Project)
In math we have just completed our largest unit, which is fractions and decimals. I always try to give the students some kind of project at the closure of a unit. This year my school purchased 2 mobile labs, an iPad lab and a brand new computer lab. With the new technologies in my building I try to incorperate as much technology as possible to enhance student learning. Therefore I've decide that the students fraction/decimal project must include one of the technologies that we have used in class. Students had the option of creating a google slide show reviewing one of the concepts taught during the unit. Students could create a Kahoot quizing the class on the various concepts learned. Students could create a poster using pixie. or students could create an edpuzzle reviewing one of the cocepts taught. There are several critia that the students had to included in their presentations.
What I found was that most of my students decided to create their own Edpuzzle. Since I had so many groups wanting to create their own Edpuzzle I decided that they all has to choose different concepts. The students are truly impressing me with their excitement. My students truly enjoy creative projects like this one. I can't to post their completed projects.
Based on the SAMR model I would rate this project as Modification.
This project not only offers student choice but higher level thinking.
Edpuzzle in Band (Performance-based class)
In performance-based classes, such as band/orchestra/chorus, it is difficult to get information out to the students in a timely manner. We are solely assessed on our performances, but are required to give students music history. Recently my concert band started a jazz unit for Black History Month. I used a video on EDpuzzle to introduce them to Jazz. I also assigned them videos with new notes so they could learn the notes before the class came. The first jazz piece we started working on is in the key of F major. They were assigned a total of three videos. One was on the key of F major, another on a new fingering, and the third on the history of Jazz. This allowed my performance-based class to be more focused on the group work instead of the individual work.
